Funky Art Featured Today: Snack

Today we feature our funky art called Snack. Guess who was hungry when this painting was created?

People particularly like the vibrant colors and the suggestion of excess in our Snack image. This modern art piece deserves a place in your kitchen, man cave or game room where it can be surrounded by other food and beverages. Placed on its side, Snack resembles a colorful bunch of bananas.

Artist Charles Demuth (1883-1935)

Artist Charles Demuth was an American watercolorist born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. A proponent of the ‘precisionist’ movement around 1915, Mr. Demuth primarily painted industrial subjects, emphasizing factories.

Among his most famous paintings are his “Five Figure in Gold” and “The Boat Ride from Sorrento”.

Artist Gustave Caillebotte (1848-1894)

Artist Gustave Caillebotte was born in 1848 in Paris, France. He obtained his law degree in 1868 then became an engineer before debuting his art in 1876 with 8 of his works, including “The Floor Scrapers“. “The Floor Scrapers” hangs in the Muse’e d’ Orsay along with 39 other of his oil paintings, mostly considered neo-impressionist and realistic in style.

One of the most famous paintings by Mr. Caillebotte is his 1877 “Oarsman with Tophat” although his “Man on a Balcony, Boulevard Haussman” (painted in 1880) sold for $14.3 million dollars in 2000!

Artist Tom Wesselmann (1931-2004)

Artist Tom Wesselmann was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. He worked as a cartoonist until 1959 when he began his artistic painting career. Mr. Wesselmann held his first solo art show in 1962 and emphasized landscapes, nudes and seascapes then began using shaped canvases and, in the 1980’s, used aluminum surfaces for his art.

By 1993, Mr Wesselmann began abstract painting after being a “Pop Art” artist immediately prior to that time. He died in 2004 after suffering complications from heart surgery.

Artist Paul Signac (1863-1935)

Artist Paul Signac was born in Paris in 1863. He started painting at age 18, primarily painting sailing scenes and the French coast as his subject matter. Mr. Signac used bright, vivid colors whether painting with watercolors or with oils. Two of Mr. Signac’s better known works are “In the Time of Harmony” and “Port St. Tropez”.

Not only was this neo-impressionist an exceptional artist, he also created many pen-ink sketches,etchings and lithographs prior to his death in 1935.

Artist Ludwig Kirchner (1880-1938)

Artist Ludwig Kirchner was a German expressionist who obtained a degree in architecture prior to becoming an artist. Well known for his landscapes and female nudes, perhaps his best known works were “Tavern” and “Marzella“, created in 1909 and 1910.

Mr. Kirchner had a troubled life, particularly after suffering a nervous breakdown in late 1916. His art became increasingly abstract prior to his 1938 suicide. His “Berlin” sold for $38 million dollars in 2006 at a Christie’s auction.

Artist Issac Israelis (1865-1934)

Artist Issac Israelis was born in 1865 in Amsterdam. He completed his studies at the Royal Academy of Art after selling his first painting (“Bugle Practice”) at age 16!

Mr. Israelis emphasized streets, cafes, cabarets and other outdoor scenes painted during his European travels, particularly when living in Paris and London before finally returning to Holland after World War 1.

In 2006, his painting entitled “A Table at the Restaurant Le Perroquet” sold for £49360 at a Christie auction.

Artist Grace Hartigan (1922-2008)

Artist Grace Hartigan was a semi-abstract expressionist born in New Jersey. Her styles changed during her lifetime including watercolor collages, cubism and figurative paintings to name a few. In 1962, she painted the watercolor collage “Lily Pond” after creating her well-known 14 piece “Orange” in 1952.

Dance to a Different Beat (shown at left) was painted with Pendleton Blended Canadian Whiskey from Hood River Distilling in Hood River, Oregon. Artist James Coignard (1925-2008)

Artist James Coignard was born in Tours, France. Mr. Coignard attended art school in Nice, France and won first place in the 1950 Nice “Arts decorates” art show.

Mr. Coignard has displayed his work in Sweden, Germany, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany and Israel.
