Gould’s Jewelfront Hummingbird

The lowland forests and swamps of South America house these cute nectar feeding straight-billed birds who have been timed sucking nectar at up to 13 times per second. Although no Gould’s Jewelfront Hummingbirds have ever entered Nathan’s hot dog eating contests, at that rate they might perform very well. The playful males are primarily showmen while the females do all of the nest making, nest maintenance, feeding and protection of the chicks, which are usually born two to a clutch. No wonder the adults do not bond in pairs but they do all migrate together in flocks since there is more safety in numbers.
