Artist Julio Larraz (1994-present)

Julio Larraz  was born in Havana, Cuba, moving to the United States in 1961. A sculptor, artist, caricaturist and printmaker, Mr. Larraz has art in collections across the world.

In 1975, Mr. Larraz won the Cintas Foundation Fellowship awarded by the Institute of International Education. Two years later he was awarded the Acquisition Prize Childe Hassam Purchase Exhibition by the American Academy of Arts and Letters in New York City.

Artist Julio Larranz (1944-present)

Artist Julio Larranz was born in Cuba, moving to the U.S. in 1961. His artistic career began by creating political caricatures. By 1971, Mr. Larranz held his first solo exhibition in Washington, D.C., at the Pyramid Gallery.

Known for his oils (on both canvas and paper), often his subjects convey a tropical feel. Many are very bold in color and often involve solid colors. Mr. Larraz has collections in several museums, including collections in Mexico, Italy, Paris, New York City , Washington D.C. and Florida. He continues to be a strong contemporary influence on contemporary and modern art.

Artist Terry Winters (1949-present)

Blowing in the Wind j 8 9 15 web HiDefArtist Terry Winters is a Brooklyn, New York born abstract modernist who obtained his BFA in 1971 from Pratt Institute. His first solo exhibition was held at the Sonnaland Gallery and featured his biomorphic forms.

Terry Winters is best known for his 1982 “Spine Series” and his 1989 “Tone”. In 1995, Mr Winters published his “Occular Proofs”. Mr. Winters continues to create abstract art that is on the leading edge of creativity.

Artist Barnett Newman (1905-1970)

A sculptor, lithographer and abstract expressionist color field painter, Mr. Newman held his first solo exhibition in 1848. His art is is known for his bold, vibrant colors, usually solid stripes with 1 or 2 vertical lines which he called “zips”. His largest work was entitled “Anna’s Light” and was 28 feet wide by 9 feet tall.

Mr. Newman has his work in several international well known collections and museums. His “Black Fire” sold at auction for $84.2 million dollars in 2014.

Artist Stanley Whitney (1946- present)

His philosophy of art is that “color dictates the structure, not the other way around.”

Artist Jules Olitski (1922-2007)

Argentina Afternoon j 8 9 15 CC web HiDefJules Olitski was a highly successful abstract painter, print maker and sculptor who studied in Paris after World War 2 then returned to the United States gaining his M.A. from New York University in 1954.

Mr. Olitski had his first solo exhibition in Paris in 1951 and his first solo show in New York in 1958. All told, Mr. Olitski had over 150 solo exhibitions during his lifetime which, in 1969,  saw him become the first living American artist to exhibit his sculptures in the Museum of Modern Art! The art of Jules Olitski was characterized by blankets of colored spray paint on canvas with acrylic edges. Mr. Olitski was elected to the National Academy of Design in 1994 in recognition of his contributions to art in the United States.

Artist Sam Gilliam (1933-present)

Argentina Afternoon j 8 9 15 CC web HiDefArtist Sam Gilliam was born in Tupelo, Mississippi and is viewed as an innovator in abstract art. Mr. Gilliam was the first artist to hang painted canvases from stretcher bars in a 1965 exhibition, created “quilted paintings” resembling patchwork quilts during the 1980’s and most recently has painted with metallic acrylics, plastic, polypropylene and computer-generated images. Mr. Gilliam held his first solo exhibition in 1955.

Mr. Gilliam donated his “In Celebration”-a 35 color serigraph- to the Smithsonian in 1987 and followed that donation with “Museum Moment” (a 90 color serigraph) to the Smithsonian in 2009

Artist Ronnie Landfield (1947-present)

Argentina Afternoon j 8 9 15 CC web HiDefArtist Ronnie Landfield is an acrylic artist born in New York whose first solo exhibition was in 1969. Mr. Landfield is best known for his acrylic landscapes and his “Border Painting Series” from 1966. Other well-known works by Mr. Landfied include his 1969 “Any Day Now”, his 1985 “Rite of Spring” and his 1999 “The Deluge”.

Mr. Landfield currently teaches art at The Art Students League in New York.

Canadian Craft Beer

In her Craft Beer Guide to Canada  (www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2015/08/the-craft-beer-guide-to-canada.html), she lists several new and popular craft beers, some of which are also available in the United States. Here is her list of some current new Canadian craft beer favorites. If you are of legal drinking age, you may want to be on the lookout for these Canadian craft beer names:

Pump House Propeller IPA, St, Ambroise Oatmeal Stout, La Fin Du Monde, Party Animal, Lug Tread, Mad Tom IPA, Rye Pale Ale, Red Racer IPA and Electric Unicorn White IPA.
