Portland, Oregon is the oft-ribbed city central to the culture spoofed in Portlandia. Quite often the popular Portlandia series is spot-on in its portrayal of the weirdness and caricature of itself that is Portland. No doubt Portlandia will have fun with the fact that Portland, Oregon was just voted the best beer city in the United States by Oyster.com, a hotel ranking website. Denver placed second, followed by San Diego. Oyster.com explained that Portland has the highest concentration of breweries of any city in the world (no doubt due to its long rainy seasons-spring, fall, winter and much of summer) and the “…endless offerings in this quirky beer-loving-hipster-friendly city”. Well said and well earned, Portland!
Portland (aka Portlandia) also took 5th place as the funniest U.S. city behind Chicago, Boston, Atlanta and Washington D.C. (we all know why D.C. is funny) according to rankings in a new book entitled “The Humor Code: A Global Search for What Makes Things Funny” written by McGraw and Warner from Boulder, Colorado. Way to kick it Portland!! To underscore the seriousness of humor in Portland, Portland just held its 7th Annual Bridgetown Comedy Festival which included over 200 comics. This festival was probably held so rain-soaked Portlander’s ccould do something indoors on their way to or from grabbing a local brew. In any event, Portland is achieving recognition for its cultural diversity and unique lifestyle. Prost to Portland!
