Artist Kees Van Dongen (1877-1968)

Artist Kees Van Dongen was a Dutch-French artist who attended the Royal Academy of Arts at the young age of 16. A Fauvist, Mr. Van Dongen worked as a portrait artist, painting mostly society women. He painted his portraits with great care, elongating his subjects to make them appear slimmer and enlarged their jewelry.

A famous quote attributed to Mr. Van Dongen is: “Painting is the most beautiful of lies”. Based on the excellent quality of the body of his work, Mr. Van Dongen was awarded the Knight of French Foreign Legion of Honor in 1926.
