Todays Funky Art Favorite: Two Cats

Inspired by the woodcuts of Kiyoshi Saito, I tried to capture the playfulness and friendship of Two Cats by using white canvas as part of the features of these two feline friends. Hopefully, the joy of the close companionship of these Two Cats is evident. Two Cats is a reminder that friends (human and animal) are vital to enrich our individual lives.

Two Cats was painted with a Widmer Brothers Okto festival ale from Widmer Brothers Brewing Co. in Portland, Oregon. You can buy your limited edition Two Cats print by going to our Shop Our Art section, clicking on the Modern and Abstract drop down category then following the prompts after clicking on the Two Cats image!

Artist Kiyoshi Saito (1907-1997)

639 two cats web1000I had the opportunity to view several pieces of art by Kiyoshi Saito in 2013 at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria (aggv.ca) in Victoria, British Columbia. His style was unmistakable. Best known for his woodcuts and his 1937 Winter in Aiza series, Mr. Saito won a first prize at the 1951 São Paulo Biemale with his work Steady Gaze.

Kiyoshi Saito merged traditional Japanese art with modern techniques to create his unique style. Often his subjects included dogs and cats as well as local villages. Some of Mr. Saitos’ work is on display at the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco (art.famsf.org).

I painted Two Cats with a very good Widmer Brothers Okto, festival ale from Widmer Brothers Brewing Co. in Portland, Oregon. Two Cats was influenced by and painted to honor Mr. Saito.

Today is International Cat Day!

639 two cats web1000International Cat Day recognizes one of humanity’s oldest and most beloved pets…the cat.

According to Days of the Year (www.daysoftheyear.com)-from which I have edited this post, International Cat Day was started in 2002 to celebrate the most popular pet on the planet. An estimated 500 million cats roam the world, which means that most every family is bound to have a relative with more kittens than former spouses.

Owning a cat has been shown to improve mental health and to relieve stress, anxiety and depression. So roll out the scratching post and the catnip for all of your furry feline friends and celebrate International Cat Day today!
